Hey Jimmy; Really sounds like gas to me. Could be old, could be water, could be dirt or rust. Could also be the infamous gas valve under the tank. Try turning to "prime" when it sputters, if it clears up right away then that's the problem.
No doubt about it, cars and bikes that sit around too much have more problems than those that are used regularly. Frank
